WORLD CANCER CAMPAIGN

2010 MOTTO: "CANCER CAN BE PREVENTED TOO"

The International Union Against Cancer (UICC) initiated the World Cancer Campaign in 2005 in response to the Charter of Paris of 2000, by World Health Organization/United Nations.

The Charter of Paris chose 4th February as World Cancer Day. Since 2006, UICC has coordinated World Cancer Day activities, supported by members, partners, the World Health Organization, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and other international bodies. In Malaysia, MAKNA is one of UICC's associates.

Each year, the Union helps its members and partners to run public awareness campaigns in their countries, measure their effectiveness, and promote regional education and mobilization projects. In 2010, the campaign's motto is “Cancer can be prevented too”, focussing on how the risk of developing cancer can significantly be reduced through simple measures:

  • Stop tobacco use and avoid exposure to second-hand smoke
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure
  • Maintain a healthy weight, through eating healthily and exercising regularly
  • Protect against cancer-causing infections
Each year, over 12 million people receive a cancer diagnosis and 7.6 million die of the disease. The good news is that approximately 40% of cancers are potentially preventable. At MAKNA, we decided to make February as our World Cancer month! Throughout the next weeks, daily updates about cancer statistics, prevention and healthy lifestyle habits will be on our Twitter and Facebook page.

This area on our website is designed especially for the occasion. The following links will provide you with more information what you can do to prevent the disease. Spread the word to those you love!

Cancer Awareness Carnival / Karnival Kesedaran Kanser (3k)

On February 4th, MAKNA and the Cancer Research Laboratory/Institut Biosains - UPM will be hosting an event to raise awareness of the public about the disease. There will be forums with renowned professors, talking about the global burden of cancer and its preventive measures. UPM's staff will also be performing a series of preventable medical exams such as breast-self examination (BSE), pap smear tests, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) and sugar-cholesterol tests. The place will also host the release of MAKNA's touchscreen system, our newly product to raise awareness and concern about breast cancer. Come check it out and touch it! It is all free and open to the public.

Cancer statistics

This information was compiled by World Health Organization and it gives you an idea of why cancer has become a global burden.

“Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide: it accounted for 7.9 million deaths (around 13% of all deaths) in 2007. The main types of cancer leading to overall cancer mortality each year are:

  • lung (1.3 million deaths/year)
  • stomach (803 000 deaths)
  • colorectal (639 000 deaths)
  • liver (610 000 deaths)
  • breast (519 000 deaths)
More than 70% of all cancer deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Deaths from cancer worldwide are projected to continue rising, with an estimated 12 million deaths in 2030. The most frequent types of cancer worldwide (in order of the number of global deaths) are:

  • Among men - lung, stomach, liver, colorectal, oesophagus and prostate
  • Among women - breast, lung, stomach, colorectal and cervical.
More than 30% of cancer deaths can be prevented and tobacco use is the single most important risk factor for cancer.”
