Agenes with her grandmother Julia
You can change someone’s life
Agenes was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia at 2 years old
Given the current situation, we are glad that we are still able to reach you electronically. COVID-19 has affected everyone greatly and has forced all of us to change the way we work. COVID-19 or no COVID-19, at MAKNA, our reach and support towards poor cancer patients remains our utmost priority. And now, more than ever, in this new norm, we need your support for us to continue helping poor patients like 10 year-old Agenes Yaker and others like her.
Agenes, child to a single parent, was diagnosed with cancer at the tender age of two. Now 10, she lives closer to her school, in a make-shift hut erected by her grandmother to shorten the hassle of almost an hour boat travel from where they live – the interiors of Kapit, Sarawak. Agenes often goes for her follow-up checks at Hospital Kapit with her grandmother. Her father had temporarily lost the ability to walk as a result of a car accident in 2014. Agenes’s grandfather assumed the responsibility of taking care of Agenes’s father and her two other siblings at their home in the interiors.
Life had become difficult.Weighed down by poverty, Agenes’s travel from the small make-shift hut to Hospital Kapit takes almost an hour and a half. Her grandmother, Julia, charters cars from the neighbouring places to get to the main road. From there, they had to hail for another vehicle to reach the hospital. Although challenged by transportations and other difficulties, nothing was able to deter this grandmother’s determination to provide the best for her grandchild’s future – good health & education.
Your donation has reached Agenes, and MAKNA is in constant communication with Agenes’s family. During this MCO period, food ration was sent to the family to ease their livelihood. It was also soothing to see her father recover from his accident and able to walk again. He had managed to secure a job as a mechanic on daily wage.
There are more out there who require such help and only your donations would enable our team to reach out to more lives.
All donation to this fund will support MAKNA services in general.
